This 1988 Volkswagen T25 has been comprehensively upgraded with a bespoke camping interior, and boasts more power and usability thanks to its original diesel engine being professionally replaced by a 2.0-litre VW Golf GTI MkIII engine and gearbox
The T25 was the final rear-engined Transporter model to emerge from Volkswagen. Initially staying true to VW’s air-cooled engine tradition when the type was launched in 1979, it made the jump to water-cooling in mid-1983, with a variety of motors fitted until the T25 was superseded by the T3 in 1991.
As with all other Transporter generations, the T25 proved highly popular as a camper van. It’s an example of one of those that we are now offering for sale, although this particular one has been upgraded with some carefully considered modern improvements, both mechanically and inside the cabin and living space, transforming it into something rather special.
Originally supplied with a standard 1.7-litre diesel engine, this T25 has undergone a substantial mechanical transformation. Its original powerplant has been replaced by a Volkswagen Golf MkIII GTI 2.0-litre petrol engine, sourced from a donor vehicle and professionally installed by respected specialist, Busmeister. The conversion, documented by a detailed workshop invoice from January this year, totalling nearly £10,000, included a five-speed gearbox, new clutch assembly, timing belt kit, water pump, thermostat, fuel injection system and bespoke wiring loom, plus many other parts. The work also included a large-core radiator, additional cooling equipment, bespoke GTI exhaust system, new fuel pump and associated plumbing, together with upgraded braking and engine management installation. Power steering has also been fitted, making this example considerably easier to manoeuvre than a standard T25s.
Visually, the van has been given something of a Volkswagen Syncro-inspired appearance, complete with full-length roof rack, chunky tyres and a distinctive Mint Green paint finish (it was previously red). It has the look of a camper ready to head off on an extended adventure anywhere its new owner might want to explore.
The interior has received equally careful attention. A full bespoke camping conversion provides the accommodation and practicality expected of a modern camper, with upgraded cooking facilities and a newly improved bed arrangement. The contemporary cabinetry, attractive wood-effect finishes and thoughtfully integrated storage give the interior a particularly smart appearance. It is a welcoming and functional space, whether used for weekend escapes or longer touring holidays.
In our opinion. what makes this T25 particularly appealing is the combination of classic Volkswagen character and considerably improved usability. The original Transporter offered traditional Volkswagen charm in abundance, but its modest performance could make modern motoring challenging. The GTI engine conversion on this one transforms the driving experience, while the five-speed transmission and power steering make it a much more versatile proposition.
This individualistic and extensively improved classic Volkswagen camper offers the T25’s distinctive styling but blends it with modernised mechanicals and a beautifully appointed interior. We think it makes a tempting alternative to the usual camper van, and one ready to make its next owner very happy... wherever they may travel in it.
