1974 Ducati 250 Mark 3

This lovely Ducati has received a nut-and-bolt restoration, with photos taken to chronicle the process, and is in superb condition as a result. It also comes with a large history folder

Ducati introduced its 250 Mark 3 in 1967, as a successor to both its Diana Mark 3 and Mach 1. The 249cc single-cylinder bevel drive overhead-cam machines incorporated some of the best features from its predecessors but in 1968, a new strengthened engine was fitted, based on the racing units of the era. Offering around 30bhp, these ‘wide case’ bikes were capable of around 90mph. Improvements over the years included a new fuel tank, dual seat, side covers, instruments and headlamps. In 1973, electronic ignition, 35mm Marzocchi forks and a twin-sided Grimeca front brake also made an appearance – all these bikes were finished in a distinctive blue and gold livery, up until manufacture ceased in 1974.

Our example dates from the final year of production, and therefore features all the various factory upgrades, making it the zenith of the 250 Mk 3’s model run. It has been the subject of a nut-and-bolt restoration with thousands spent a huge devotion not to mention the time, and is correctly finished in the blue and gold livery that these last bikes wore from the factory. Its condition is exceptional; although rebuilt (largely) to standard spec, many new parts have been fitted, all bearings and seals replaced, and the chrome, tyres, battery and wiring renewed. The badges and lettering are all correct, in place and unmarked, and even the rear numberplate is in the older font current when the bike was new.

The one feature that has been changed is the carburettor; the Ducati now has an Amal concentric carburettor. However, the original Dell’Orto component will come with the motorbike when sold. The odometer shows 386 miles, which may well have been reset when restoration took place. The Mark 3 rides as well as it looks; it’s an easy starter and runs as sweetly as you’d expect a bike of this calibre to do.

The paperwork file accompanying the machine includes the V5C, Haynes workshop manual, and assorted magazine articles about the model. In addition, there’s a substantial stack of invoices from around 2014 to 2017, photos of the restoration and a notebook listing the costs associated with the rebuild.

This is a prime opportunity to acquire a superb example of a true Italian two-wheeled thoroughbred that requires nothing except to be admired, ridden and enjoyed.
