THE BACKGROUND
The origins of the Daytona 1000 stretch back to 1971, when Italian (and Europe’s oldest) motorcycle manufacturer Moto Guzzi launched its V7 Sport. It became a popular machine for endurance events, evolving into the 750S and 750 S3. The latter, in turn, metamorphosed into the Moto Guzzi Le Mans after Alejandro de Tomaso - of supercar fame - took over the firm in 1973. However, as modern, sporty and stylish as it was, at 81bhp, the Le Mans was lacking in power compared to compared to contemporaries from Japan - which were putting out over 100bhp - and even homeland Italian rivals like the Ducati 851, which was achieving 93bhp.

In response, Umberto Todero, who’d worked for Motor Guzzi since 1939, was commissioned during the mid-1980s to come up with a new one-litre engine. When completed, it delivered 92bhp. It just needed the right bike to be installed in.

Meanwhile, over in the United States, there was a dentist by the name of Dr John Wittner, whose team was competing in the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) endurance ‘Middleweight Class’ championships. He was racing Moto Guzzi Le Mans 1000s, but had done quite a lot of tweaking to improve them; increasing power, reducing fuel consumption, and experimenting with a number of different mechanical configurations. He came to the attention of De Tomaso and was brought in to design what would become the Daytona 1000, in collaboration with Todero. The Daytona, with its new 90-degree V-twin 992cc engine, came to fruition in 1992, with the road models looking very similar to the the bikes that were also achieving success in racing. They were heavyweight machines, but with a brutal yet compelling elegance to them. The type was built through to 1999, with an increase to 1064cc along the way, in which form they peaked at 107bhp.

THE HISTORY
This Daytona 1000 was registered in April 1994 and has the 992cc engine that the model was originally fitted with. Not much is known of its early history, but it is believed to be original, although it’s entirely possible that some work has been carried out over the years to help keep it in the excellent condition it is currently in. That there are Datatag electronic identification systems fitted on the front cowl and rear cowling, which date from the mid-1990s, would tend to suggest the bike is largely untouched.

The odometer shows just 6044 kilometres and the MoT history confirms this as genuine. A check on the online test history shows that the motorcycle has covered just dozens of kilometres, if that, most years since 2005. This is a bike that has seen very little use over most of its life, and patently been pampered and cared for.

THE PAPERWORK
While the paperwork file isn’t huge, it does contain the owner’s manual, as well as a election of MoT certificates dating back to 1998, which give the assurance of that 6044km total being true. There’s also Datatag information, as well as a 2016 bill for two new tyres, at a cost of £190.

THE CONDITION
This Moto Guzzi wears the passage of over a quarter of a century very well. With its bright red angular yet streamlined bodywork and white alloy wheels with six curved spokes, it is a very striking design. Externally, there is very little to fault; the scarlet paint (very appropriate for something Italian) is still very vibrant, with no signs of fading anywhere, as some reds are prone to do if left exposed to the sun for extended periods. Aside from three small stonechips on the nose (one above the ‘Guzzi’ of Moto Guzzi, the other two just below it) there are very few blemishes to be found. The Datatag ID tags, with their funky computer font script, can be found just below the windscreen and above the eagle logo at the bank. There may well be others secreted elsewhere, since the paperwork shows five transponders issued.

There’s little in the way of chrome, but a lot of aluminium, most of it on the substantial engine. It’s all holding up extremely well, with just the lightest of age-related mottling discernible on some of the aluminium parts and some marking hardly noticeable on the handlebar crosspiece. The black of the ‘OHC 4V GUZZI’ lettering on the rocker covers is a little worn - see our pictures.

The white-finished wheels have just a few marks, the most noticeable of which is a patch where some balance weights have been removed on the front one. Brembo ventilated disc brakes are fitted front and rear and are in excellent order. The tyres are Roadtec; 120/70 ZR17 M/C at the front, 160/60 ZR18 at the rear. Having only been put on in 2016, they’ve still got plenty of tread left, with no damage apparent.

THE MECHANICS
With just 6044km covered - the equivalent of 3756 miles - this bike is barely run in. Thus, everything mechanical is in fine fettle; it starts and runs exactly as Moto Guzzi intended back in 1994. Capable of velocities far in excess of British speed limits, this Daytona 1000 offers epic performance, coupled with the ability to rein it all in quickly thanks to those well-specced Brembo brakes. A high performance (and expensive) Termignoni exhaust system is a recent fitment.

OUR OPINION
The Daytona 1000 offers the best of Italian style and performance in one very distinctive, stunning package. These bikes are very desirable under any circumstances now, but this one has the additional bonus of such an incredibly low mileage. It’s in first-class condition, both cosmetically and mechanically, and is a beautiful example of its breed; a very sought-after modern European classic.
