This 1989 Jeep Grand Wagoneer SJ has to be one of the best examples of its type still surviving, with just 37,500 miles on its clock and some useful but subtle modifications carried out to make it even better

Jeep is to the USA what Land Rover is to Britain, a company renowned for its off-road vehicles, and with its international reputation forged since the 1940s – helped, of course, by many decades of military exploits. The Grand Wagoneer is the brand’s luxury SUV, blending genuine four-wheel capability with a level of comfort and equipment that was unusual for an off-road machine when it was first introduced in 1962. It was one of the vehicles that help inspire and influence the Range Rover at the start of the following decade. After being produced from 1962 to 1993, the Grand Wagoneer name was dropped but was reintroduced in 2021 and remains in use today.

Rather like the first generation Range Rover, the original SJ Grand Wagoneer had a long life; its handsome boxy shape with imposing grille lasting over the 1963 to 1991 model years. A characteristic feature of many examples was the woodgrain effect panelling along the sides. This longevity and distinctiveness helped transform the model into something of an icon of American motoring.

Here, we are delighted to offer a particularly appealing 1989 SJ example, finished in Sand Metallic, with a mere 37,515 miles recorded and with an extensive programme of mechanical refurbishment and carefully considered upgrades. Equipped with a large capacity 5.9-litre V8 engine, four-wheel drive capability and considerable passenger comfort, it offers a considerable amount of classic off-roader for the money.

The Grand Wagoneer is incredibly original, a quality that is very hard to find these days. It’s in excellent condition throughout, with very good paint and chromework – and that all-important faux timber panelling also in fine order. The sand-coloured interior is similarly well-preserved, with only the lightest of patina to the carpets and leather/cloth seats to remind any occupants that this is a vehicle approaching its 40th birthday. Even the green digital displays in the instrument cluster and on the Jeep-branded cassette/radio are still functioning as they should, as are all the analogue gauges – giving healthy readouts. The chassis is rock solid, still with the original spot-welding underneath, as illustrated by some of our pictures.

Thanks to extensive work over the last few years, the Grand Wagoneer drives just as well as it looks. It’s not a vehicle designed around outright acceleration; rather its appeal lies in the effortless character of the V8, the relaxed operation of the automatic gearbox and the ability to cover distances with the unhurried confidence – whether on-road or off.

The supporting paperwork chronicles extensive mechanical attention, with a substantial programme of work carried out most recently in April of 2026 at a cost of over £4200. Accompanying invoices record work undertaken on the engine and fuel system, including the installation of a fuel-injection system, replacement ignition components, a new wiring harness and associated fuel-system equipment. The documentation also records attention to the exhaust system, including stainless-steel components, together with replacement cooling-system parts.

The cooling work includes a replacement radiator, water pump, thermostat, hoses and associated fittings. The braking system has also received significant attention. The recorded jobs includes a brake conversion kit, replacement master cylinder and associated hydraulic components. Power steering has been comprehensively addressed too, with invoices documenting pump rebuilding and replacement components throughout the system. Further expenditure has covered the air-conditioning system, including conversion-related components, while the power windows and electrically-operated tailgate window have received attention through replacement motors and related parts.

The documentation provides a very detailed picture of the investment made in the Jeep, with invoices covering parts, labour and specialist work. Prospective purchasers are encouraged to inspect the accompanying records and discuss the work with us.

With its low recorded mileage, charismatic V8 engine, very of-its-era attractive Sand Metallic finish and extensively-chronicled mechanical attention, this example offers an appealing opportunity for the enthusiast seeking something genuinely different from the usual classic car choices. It is a vehicle that is ready for the rough ‘n’ tumble yet also pampering, and very individualistic on British roads.
