The third generation Dodge Challenger was introduced in 2008, with its brawny and imposing looks serving as a tribute to the classic first generation machines of 1969-74. It was perfectly pitched to take on the contemporary Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro, both of which also sported retro styling. Widely considered a significant commercial and cultural success, it frequently outsold its Ford and General Motors rivals during its 15-year lifespan, and over in the USA was responsible for revitalising Dodge as a brand.

Our very flamboyant example, a R/T ‘Shaker’ with 5.7-litre Hemi V8, dates from 2023, the final year of production. And it’s something a little special. Finished in exuberant Go Mango Orange with a black leather interior, it exudes attitude – and that’s just when standing still. In action, it offers exhilarating performance. At its heart is a 5.7-litre Hemi V8, an engine with a sparkling Chrysler heritage which, here, gives a heady 375bhp. Being the six-speed manual transmission version, it boasts a touch more power and performance than the automatic.  

In addition to its well-specced R/T (Road/Track) trim level, our car also features the ‘Shaker’ appearance and performance package, centred around the functional engine-mounted hood scoop protruding through the bonnet. In a nostalgic nod to the 1970s’ originals, it physically shakes with the engine’s vibrations, hence the name. Other special aspects are the Mopar cold-air intake, conical air filter and optimised air box along with exterior treatments such as under-bonnet ‘Shaker’ badging, satin black rear spoiler and black fuel-filler door. Inside, there’s a white-faced instrument cluster and dash plaque.  

The car also boasts other upgrades such as a black hood pin kit, SRT front splitter, automatic projector headlamps, rear parking camera, Uconnect seven-inch touchscreen display with Apple Car Play and Google Android Auto plus six-speaker media hub, integrated voice command, air conditioning with dual zone auto temperature control, keyless entry, push-button start, performance steering and suspension, and an active exhaust.

Having covered less than 2000 miles during its three-year life, this Dodge Challenger R/T ‘Shaker’ is still practically as new, both in cosmetics and the way it drives.
