If any car deserves celebration, it’s the Volkswagen Golf GTI. It made its debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 1975 and was officially launched in June 1976, going on to define the ‘Hot Hatch’ genre and spawn generations of imitators. But despite the many rivals and also-rans, VW’s own GTI has remained at (or at least near) the top of the tree throughout most of its incarnations.

To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the GTI, Volkswagen released the Clubsport S in 2016. This was a limited edition, track-focused Golf that, at the time of its launch, was the most powerful Golf GTI ever made, famously breaking the Nürburgring Nordschleife record for front-wheel-drive production cars by clearing the ‘Ring in 7 minutes, 49.21 seconds.

Just 400 were manufactured, with each one featuring a numbered cabin plaque. The UK, which has always especially embraced the GTI, received the largest share with 150 cars, available in the original GTI colours of Tornado Red, Pure White or Deep Black Pearl. Boasting 306bhp and with a top speed of 165mph (as the first GTI without an electronic speed limiter), the Clubsport S featured a stripped and lightened interior with Alcantara-trimmed racing bucket seats and steering wheel, and a classic golf-ball gear knob, plus the rear seats, sound deadening and variable boot floor removed. The wheels were 19in Pretoria alloys.

Our 2017 example is something extremely special; in fact, we’d describe it as museum quality. It’s car number 201 of 400, finished in Tornado Red, and has covered a mere 2730 miles. Its state of preservation is remarkable; despite being nine years old, the sill embellishers still have their protective transparent covering in place, and the interior and exterior remain flawless, including the Alcantara – not always the easiest of materials to keep looking as good as it does here. The car retains all its original features, including the scarce option of factory-fitted air-conditioning, and is completely unmodified.

This timewarp Clubsport S presents a rare opportunity to acquire what must be one of the best examples of Volkswagen’s GTI 40th anniversary gift to itself, and the motoring world in general. It’s peak Golf, still in peak condition, and still just as fresh and enigmatic as when it first emerged from the showroom. A remarkable machine in remarkable order, and this is a remarkable chance to buy a very desirable future classic that’s barely covered any miles.
